Works Like This

How the world's systems actually work.

Works Like This is a YouTube channel about the systems most of us rely on without ever seeing: the electricity grid, container ports, water treatment, satellite navigation, technical standards, insurance. Each episode takes one system and explains what it really does, why it was built that way, and what happens when it fails.

Episodes are researched from primary sources and cited on screen. Where something isn't known, the episode says so. The channel is written, directed and reviewed by a person, and every episode is checked before it goes out.

How episodes are made

Visuals are diagrams, maps and charts, generated programmatically rather than filmed or photographed. Narration is a licensed clone of the creator's own voice. No photorealistic AI imagery is used, at all.

Software assists with production. It does not decide what is interesting, what is true, or what gets published. Those stay human.

Works Like This Pipeline

Works Like This Pipeline is the private, in-house software that produces and publishes this channel. It is not a product, it has no other users, and it is not available to sign up for. It runs on a single machine operated by the channel's owner.

The pipeline uses Google's YouTube APIs to do two things on this channel, and only this channel:

The only Google Account the pipeline ever connects to is the one that owns this channel. It does not access, request or process data belonging to anyone else.

What it accesses, how that data is stored, and how access can be withdrawn are set out in the Privacy Policy. Use of the pipeline is covered by the Terms of Service.
